Register a domain

Both businesses, professionals and individuals can apply for a Norwegian domain name. All applicants must have a Norwegian postal address.

  • Businesses and professionals must be registered as an approved type of organization in the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Enhetsregisteret).
  • As an individual applicant you must be of age (18 years) and be registered in the Folkeregisteret.
  • Individuals can only apply within the category priv.no. The domain name will then be chosenname.priv.no.

How to apply for a domain name

Find a registrar
All domain applicants must have a registrar. You can choose among all the registrars in the list of .no registrars, or from the list of registrars offering services to individuals respectively.

Familiarize yourself with the domain name policy
You must comply with the domain name policy in both your registration and your use of the domain. Pay special attention to Section 15, about the applicant's responsibilities and duties. If you have any questions, ask your registrar.

Choose a domain name
In principle, you are free to choose a domain name. However, you cannot choose a name which is in use by other organizations, or a name which is prohibited or reserved for various reasons. Please note that it is your responsibility as an applicant to ensure that the domain name does not contravene the domain name policy or infringe others right to the name. If you are in doubt, ask your registrar.

Get yourself a personal identifier (PID)
As an individual applicant, you have to get yourself a personal ID (PID). This ID is a synonym to your official identity number so that you can avoid to give this to the registrar. You get your PID by submitting your official identity number into our PID automat. You get your PID per email the day after you order it. Then you can submit your domain name application. Ask your registrar if you have questions about the PID service.

Do you want to protect the domain against transfer?
You can choose to secure the domain with a code on registration. The code prevents the transfer of your domain to a new registrar without your consent. We recommend that an authentication code is set. Ask your registrar for details.

Legal contact
As a professional applicant you have to decide who shall be the legal contact for your domain name. She or he has to be employed at or be directly affiliated to your company. The legal contact must have a Norwegian postal address. For private domains, the applicant doubles as the legal contact.

The registrar submits your application
The registrar completes the application and sends it to us. All you need to do is to sign a declaration confirming that you are familiar with and will comply with the domain name policy, and that you are responsible if the registration infringes others right to the name.

Wait for a reply
Most applications are processed immediately. The reply goes to the registrar. The registrars' processing period may vary, so ask about when you can expect the reply.

Check the details that have been registered
Congratulations! You are now the holder of a Norwegian domain name. You should now check that the details about your domain are in fact correct. It is also very important that you keep the information up to date. The information creates the basis for further follow-up of your domain. Remember that the domain name and the information related to it are your responsibility.

Good luck!
