Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic and other non-Latin letters on the right side of the “dot” is vital for making Internet accessible for all the people in the world wanting to use their own language and script. The 36th ICANN meeting in Korea gathered Internet actors from all over the world – authorities, industry, registries, registrars and academia – wanting to develop Internet even further. New billions of Internet usersAmong several important resolutions the implementation of non-Latin letters in domain names is outstanding. This is a significant technical development in the 40 year Internet history. After years of drafting, testing, policy development and high-level negotiations, the new scheme will be launched the 16th November 2009, and thereby the potential to expand the number of Internet users with billions. The first stage of this achievement will only cover countries or territories having another alphabet than the Latin in their official language. Still confusion on introduction of .whateverThe process on introduction of indefinite numbers of new TLDs - .whatever – continues. Several problems have arisen since the proposition was introduced in 2008. No definite launching date has therefore been decided yet. The discussion comprises the border line between national and generic top-level domains. Trade mark organizations as well as national authorities fight to protect the names they feel do not belong in the gTLD space. There are also strong forces advocating that all IP related questions should be solved before an indefinite number of new TLDs can be introduced.
