Norid exchanges letters with ICANN

Norid manages the .no domain in the best interests of Norwegian society. A central measure in achieving this, has been to make sure that framework, policy and operation of the .no domain are fit to accommodate Norwegian requirements, something that has influenced among other things the model for how the .no domain name policy is developed. This principle is also deeply rooted in the Norwegian Domain Regulation.

ICANN is the international organisation that runs the central database where all registries for country-code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) are registered.

Through processes within ICANN, Norid wishes to take part in influencing the international developments, in order to win accept for the view that frameworks for ccTLDs should be set chiefly within the individual country. To facilitate this, we have exchanged letters with ICANN, documenting a common understanding of the current distribution of roles between Norid and ICANN.

We are pleased to have reached this important milestone. This does not change our status as an independent organisation with regards to ICANN, and the letters acknowledge that framework, policy and operation of the .no domain stay under local control.
