A domain name for life

As of 6 June 2011 the whole population can get a Norwegian domain name. A personal domain opens many possibilities, for instance a permanent email address regardless of employer or internet supplier.

Separate area for individuals

Individuals get their own area, priv.no, and the domain name will be <domain name>.priv.no. Today there are almost no registrations within this area, so there are countless great names to choose from. It is possible to apply for a personal name, a family name or any other name or word, for instance johnsonfamily.priv.no or oscarthecat.priv.no.

The launch of priv.no will happen from 6 June to 14 June. A draw will then be used to decide the order in which applications for the same name will be processed.

Why get a private domain name?

A private domain name makes it possible to create an online identity, regardless of a person's employer or internet supplier. The domain name can be used to create a blogg or a web page, as well as for email addresses and other services. It can thus be used as a starting point for all the online services that are available to a person, like Facebook, Twitter, blogs and so on.

A family can get a family domain, where each family member have their own email address, and maybe a web site. They can keep the domain name and the email address for the rest of their life.

Safety on the Internet becomes more and more important. The Norwegian top level domain is known for high quality and safety, and has received very high scores in international surveys. This is important for many people when they choose a top level domain for their domain registration.

Who can apply?

To register a domain under priv.no you must:

  • be a resident in Norway
  • be registered in the National register
  • be at least 18 years old
You can have up to five domain names within priv.no.

How do I apply?

If you have more questions, please see our FAQ.

Old priv.no registrations will be maintained

All old priv.no domains can be maintained when priv.no is relaunched 6 June 2011. This is provided that the holder accepts the new policy and make the necessary updates to the domain.

Norid will function as the registrar for old priv.no domains until the domains are formally updated. See here for more details.
