Do you have an old priv.no domain?

All old priv.no domains can be maintained when priv.no is relaunched 6 June 2011. This is provided that you as the holder accept the new policy and make the necessary updates to the domain.

Norid will function as the registrar for old priv.no domains until the domains are formally updated. All old holders must then get a new registrar.

How to maintain an old priv.no domain

Familiarize yourself with the policy
You must comply with the policy when you register and use the domain. Pay special attention to chapter 15 about the applicant's responsibilities and duties.

Get a personal ID (PID)
The personal ID identifies you as the holder and replaces your national identity number. You use your personal ID for all future changes to the domain.

The PID automat

Applicant declaration
You accept the new policy by signing an applicant declaration. You can send the original document to us by post or keep the original yourself and send the document by fax or email.

Use registrar-ID 'REG1-NORID' ved generating the applicant declaration.

You must identify yourself
We want to verify who we are in contact with. We therefore ask that you send us a copy of your passport or your driver's license. If you act on behalf of the holder, we will need an authorization. The documents can be sent by post or by fax/email.

Send us updated contact information
By this we mean contact data that will be published in the whois database. We need the following data:

  • your name
  • streetaddress or post box number
  • post code
  • postal area
  • mobile phone number
  • email address

The address can be any Norwegian address where we can reach you by post.

Use this email template to send us the necessary information.

Check the registered information
You will receive a confirmation from us when the domain has been updated. We recommend that you check that the information is correct.

Get a registrar
After your domain has been updated, you have to get a new registrar. You can choose between the registrars who offer their services to private individuals.

Avoid deletion of your domain

All old priv.no must be updated
Domains that are not updated, will eventually be deleted. This will happen in late October. A deleted domain is made available to other applicants immediately.

All old priv.no domains must be moved to a new registrar
We will be the registrar for an old priv.no domain until the holder has sent us the applicant's declaration and the contact information has been updated. You as the holder then have to initiate the transfer to a new registrar. Holders that do not have a new registrar by 7 December 2011 will be notified about this. If you do not act on this, the domain will eventually be deleted.

Consequently, there are two things you must do to maintain your domain:

  • you must send us an email to update the domain
  • you must find a new registrar

327 pioneers

The domain name priv.no was registered as early as 1993, and for more than 10 years it was administrated by different private companies. In 2007 the domain and 327 registrations were transferred to Norid, who subsequently started a process to find out how private individuals should gain access to register their own domain names under the Norwegian policy. After extensive public hearings, the decision was made to maintain priv.no as a categpry domain for private individuals.

The data we received was missing contact information for most of the old priv.no holders. These holders are listed as NN in the whois database. It is therefore crucial that the holders contact us and update their domains to avoid deletion.
