To be a registrar

How can I become a registrar?
Send an email to info@norid.no, and we will send you information and agreement documents. More about how to become a registrar.
How do I update my contact information?
You update your contact information in the registrar web. These updates can only be done by your admin user.
Can my registrar agreement be transferred to another organization?
The principal rule is that the registrar agreement cannot be transferred. The new enterprise has to establish its own registrar agreement. When the new agreement is up and running, your domains can be transferred. However, for some minor organization changes the agreement can be transferred. More about transfer of the registrar agreement.
How do I terminate my registrar agreement with Norid?
You have to send a letter of termination together with your complete archive of applicant declaration forms, which means declarations for all registered and transferred domains. You can find a list of these domains on the registrar web. Remember to check that the correct bank account number for repayment of your deposit is registered in the registrar web. More about termination of the registrar agreement.

About the domain name policy

Am I allowed to use a local proxy to register a .no domain name outside of Norway?

To register a .no domain, the organization must be registered in Norway. However, a domain name holder can use his domain as he likes, including leaving the use of the domain to others. This means that there is a loophole which opens for registration through a local proxy.

In Norid's view, there are two main kinds of proxies: one acts as proxy to protect the rights of a client (laywers, publishers, distributors, etc.), the other runs a business that anyone can use to secure a domain name they want. The former is a practice one can view as a valid local representative of the third party, the latter is not.

For both practices it is the case that the proxy becomes the formal domain name holder, which means that third parties who use the domain have no formal rights to it. If the holder wishes to delete the domain, transfer it to others, change the name servers etc., the user has no control or possibility to prevent this.

Additionally, circumventing the .no domain name policy by setting up one or several companies in Norway whose only object is to register and hold domain names, be it for third parties (avoiding the local presence requirement) or to hoard domains (avoiding the quota set on number of domain names per holder), is a practice we strongly discourage. We have in the past taken action against such practices, and the validity of that action has also been confirmed by a Norwegian court of law. (Norwegian text only.)

Handling of applications

Why can't I register the domain no.no?
The domain no.no is reserved for test purposes, such as a test zone for DNSSEC. We do not have an active test project for DNSSEC at the moment, but for this reason no.no will be kept on the list of reserved domains.
I have requested a deletion of a domain, but the domain name holder has changed his mind. What can I do to stop the process?
Contact us immediately via email (info@norid.no) and phone (+47 07355). Ask us to cancel the deletion. We will send a confirmation via email as soon as it is done.
How do I recall a domain that has been deleted from the database?
The domain was deleted from the DNS less than 30 days ago:
  • Send an email to info@norid.no, explain the situation and request that the domain be re-registered. Do not send your custommer directly to Norid, you are the ones we will invoice (see below).
  • Norid will reconstruct the domain manually, and email you with a confirmation as soon as the domain is back in the database.
  • Please note that this will be invoiced the same way as new registrations (NOK 60). You do not, however, need to collect a new applicant declaration and the 'created'-date will remain as it was, so ensure that the complaint deadline and such will not be reset.

The domain has been out of the DNS for more than 30 days:

  • You need to register the domain from scratch, as you would any other first-time registration. Remember to collect the applicant statement before you create the domain.

The legal contact person (legal-c) for the domain cannot sign the holder's approval form for transfer (deletion). How can I get this domain transferred (deleted)?
If someone other than the domain's legal-c is to sign the approval form, the holder must prove that this person represents the organization that holds the domain. Accepted documents are for example
  • copy of the Certificate of Incorporation from the Brønnøysund Register Center
  • copy of the court records from the bankruptcy court (when the holder is under bankruptcy)
  • copy of a public notice from the Brønnøysund Register Center (when the holder is being liquidated or similar)
  • copy of the certificate of probate (Norwegian: skifteattest) from the sheriff's office or similar (when a sole proprietorship's owner has passed away)
Who should sign the holder's approval of transfer (deletion), when the registered holder is a different company than the one that claims to be the real holder?
This situation usually arises when the company has been through an organizatorial change (takeovers, mergers, etc.) without transfering the domain accordingly. To sort this out, you need to ask the holder to present documentation showing the entire chain of changes that have happened. Thorough documentation is a prerequisite before a person who has authority to sign on behalf of the company that uses the domain, is allowed to sign for a transfer (removal).
What are the requirements for becoming a legal contact?
The legal contact has to be employed at or be directly affiliated to the applicant company. She or he must have a Norwegian address.

The applicant declaration form

Why do I have to collect a declaration form from the applicants?
The applicant declaration form is part of the contract between Norid and the applicant. Its purpose is to clarify the responsibility between the applicant, Norid and the registrar. If doubt arises about the rights to a registered domain name, it is crucial for the registrar as well that the declaration form exists and that it was signed in accordance with the requirements.
When should the declaration form be signed?
The declaration form should be collected and signed before the application is sent.
How should the declaration form be dated?
The declaration form should always be dated the day it is signed. It should never be antedated, for example to give the impression that it was signed at an earlier time than what was actually the case. If you have to collect a new declaration form from a customer, it must be archived with the original declaration so there is no doubt that it was signed at the time of registration.
What is a spot check of declaration forms?
We regularly check that the registrars collect the declaration forms before the applications are sent, and that they are archived in accordance with the registrar agreement. Over time we will check most of the registrars, as the declaration form is an important part of the agreement between Norid and the holders, and an important part of the registrar's responsibility. More about how to archive your declaration forms.
What happens if Norid does not receive a complete archive of declaration forms?
If the archive you have submitted is incomplete, we normally contact the holders directly to collect new declaration forms. The costs connected with this will be withdrawn from your deposit (NOK 25 per domain). Alternatively you can collect new declaration forms yourself and send them to us. Please contact info@norid.no for information about how to do this.

The registrar web

I forgot my passworrd to the registrar web. What do I do?
If you have forgotten your admin password, you have to contact info@norid.no. A one-time link for setting a new password will be sent to your legal contact. More about resetting your password.
Your admin user may assist if the forgotten password belongs to a user with read-only access.

Invoicing and renewal

How can I find out what domains I am supposed to pay for as they do not appear on the paper invoice?
You will find the basis for the invoice by logging in to the registrar web.
When are domains renewed?
You may renew a domain within a period of 1 month prior to the expiry date.
I forgot to renew a domain. What do I do?
If you do not renew a domain, a 90 day long deletion process starts automatically. You can renew the domain throughout the entire removal process. The annual fee will be billed on your next invoice. When the domain has been removed from Norid's database, is it too late.
Where can I see which domains expire this month and need to be renewed?
There is a list on the registrar web under ‘Renewal data’.
Can I cancel the renewal of a domain?
No, the renewal happens instantly and cannot be cancelled
We have been invoiced for a domain the holder does not want to keep. Can the fee be credited?
No, when an invoice is issued, all renewals, registrations and transfers have to be paid.
Why does Norid send invoices to the wrong address?
We send invoices to the billing contact which is registered on the registrar web. A person with admin rights to the registrar web can change your billing address.

Technical issues

Does Norid always check whether a new DNS server has a zone for the specific domain?
When we receive an application, we always check that the delegation information is correct. By this we mean that there should be at least two name servers which answer with a correct SOA post and with the same set of NS posts which are supposed to be registered in the .no zone. We do not check neither MX nor A posts (except when it is necessary in order to check glue posts).
What is a glue record?
In DNS the name servers are listed by name, not by IP address. This means that you have to do another DNS inquiry to find the IP address. If the authoritative server for a domain is under this domain itself, you will have a circular dependency. Glue records are used to solve this problem.
Is .no available through IPv6?
Yes, three out of seven name servers for .no are available through IPv6. Two of the name servers which serv the category domains and the geografical name tree are available through IPv6 as well.
Can a name server be available only through IPv6?
No, IPv6 is not yet sufficiently spread, so we do not want to have the infrastructure available through IPv6 only. For the time being the name servers then must have an IPv4 address (A glue record) in addition to AAAA.
My customer has IPv6 through a tunnel. Is it possible for her to have a name server there?
No, we want .no to be stable and robust. Normally a tunnel is less stable than a "native" infrastructure.
What are the password rules?
The registry system uses passwords on the following places:
  • For login on the EPP channel, as well as for changing of the EPP channel password.
  • For login on the registrar web, as well as for changing password for it's users.
  • It is also possible to set a password for a domain (delegation). This password is called an authentication code.

Note that the passwords protect different things, and should therefore be different.

The rules for passwords and authentication codes are common. The rules are described for authentication code under guidelines.
