Data conversion - part 2

A new test conversion of our database has revealed a number of invalid data that need to be corrected. Each registrar now has a list of data objects that they need to fix. The list is publised on the login part of the registrar web, as "Whois data --> Invalid whois data. Data errors which must be corrected before the new EPP system goes online.". The list is colon-separated, the format is ANSI. Please note that this list will only be updated when we do a new test conversion of the database, approximately once per month.

Typical data errors are, invalid formatting of post codes, phone numbers, email addresses, and country codes; too many contacts listed for host objects; too many phone- or fax numbers, character encoding mishaps and invalid characters.

Correcting errors

Each registrar must go through their list and fix the errors. You do this by sending in change of information requests for every data object. In some cases you will need to confer with your customer, e.g. when you remove surplus phone numbers from contact persons and organizations.

Some few errors can be corrected automatically by our conversion program, e.g. errors like incorrect character has been used (e.g. ` instead of ') or character encoding mishaps (e.g. Troms=F8 instead of Tromsø). It is important that you check the validity of the automatic corrections. Whenever you find errors, please update the data object yourselves.

None of these errors will be carried over to the new database. This means that data you have not corrected at the time we set the new system into production will either be deleted, or we will attempt to correct them on the fly, with the consequences that may follow. Please refer to the table below for details.

New error messages

You will see some error messages that deviate from the current system. The prime changes are:

  • Host objects
    • only one contact
  • Contact objects (organization, role, person)
    • only one phone number
    • only one fax number
    • only one mobile phone number
Common errors
Error message Cause Consequences if the error is not fixed
EKS1P-NORID:Person has too many phone numbers New in EPP: A contact may only have one phone number. Norid will remove surplus phone numbers and pick a random number to remain.
EKS1P-NORID:Person has too many fax numbers New in EPP: A contact may only have one fax number. Norid will remove surplus fax numbers and pick a random number to remain.
EKS2H-NORID:Too many host contacts New in EPP: A host object may only have one contact. Norid will remove surplus contacts and pick a random contact to remain.
EKS1P-NORID:Invalid fax number [...] Fax numbers must be listed in the internasjonal format, starting with the country code. A regular Norwegian number should follow this pattern: [+47 xx xx xx xx]. The number will be removed.
EKS1P-NORID:Invalid phone number [...] Phone numbers must be listed in the internasjonal format, starting with the country code. A regular Norwegian number should follow this pattern: [+47 xx xx xx xx]. The number will be removed.
EKS1P-NORID:Email address [TBP@nycomed.] is not well-formed
EKS1P-NORID:Invalid email address [TBP@nycomed.]
The address is at least lacking the country code or generic code. Email addresses must follow the RFC-822-format. The email address will be removed. If the contact is a legal contact for a domain, this means that email warnings from Norid will not reach the domain holder. This may lead to the deletion of the customer's domain.
EKS1P-NORID:Invalid email address [eksempel.@xx.yy.no] Illegal character before the @. Email addresses must follow the RFC-822-format. The email address will be removed. If the contact is a legal contact for a domain, this means that email warnings from Norid will not reach the domain holder. This may lead to the deletion of the customer's domain.
EKS4O-NORID:Invalid contact value [Kj=F8pmannsgaten 23]
EKS4O-NORID:sanitized Kj=F8pmannsgaten 23 -> Kjøpmannsgaten 23
Character encoding mishap when at the time of registration. Make sure that Norid's correction is valid. Norid fixes the error automatically, but we cannot guarantee that it will be completely correct.
EKS1P-NORID:Invalid contact value [Example Business AS (example)\nHaakon v11`s gt. 5b]
EKS1P-NORID:sanitized Example Business AS (example)\nHaakon v11`s gt. 5b -> Example Business AS (example)\nHaakon v11's gt. 5b
Invalid type of apostrophe. Note that "\n" does not mark an error, it marks that the following text is on a new line in the database. Make sure that Norid's correction is valid. Norid fixes the error automatically, but we cannot guarantee that it will be completely correct.
EKS1P-NORID:invalid Norwegian postal code 'NO-N-7018' Norwegian post codes has a format of NO-xxxx. Post codes and their corresponding place names must validate against the official lists of Posten Norge. The postal code is removed. The address listed in the data object becomes invalid and useless. At worst, this means that warning messages from Norid do not reach the domain name holder, which in turn may lead to the deletion of the custommer's domain.
EKS1P-NORID:invalid country The two-letter country code is missing or has an invalid format. Norid will add "NO" or leave the field empty.
