ICANN opens for new generic top-level domains
On 30 April, the international administrator of top-level domains, ICANN, opened applications for new generic top-level domains. The last time it was possible to apply for these was in 2012. The opening follows a years-long international process in which various stakeholders have discussed the guidelines for what may be applied for. Norid has taken part in this work, with a focus on ensuring protection for the names of countries and territories. The application portal is open to everyone, but applicants must both meet certain technical requirements and be able to pay an application fee of 227 000 USD, approximately 2,13 million NOK.
