Jon Bing has passed away

It was with deep sorrow that Norid received the message that Jon Bing, dr. juris and a professor of at the University of Oslo, has passed away. Norway has lost a great personality and professional.

Jon Bing was as deeply engaged in fiction as he was in non-fiction writing, and has written many books in both genres. He has also written a radio drama and an opera libretto, and books for children as well as for adults, especially within the science fiction genre. He held honorary doctorates at several universitites around the world. At the same time he was a humble, warm and very friendly person. For decades and up until recently he welcomed former and new students into his home once a month for conversation and networking. Through this he has given many generations of Norwegian lawyers lasting memories and valuable knowledge.

Jon Bing made invaluable contributions within the legal development of the Internet, and worked tirelessly for the understanding of the interaction between the legal field and computer technology. He also gave visionary input to the public debate. In the 1970s Jon Bing claimed that every home would have their own computer one day. Very few people believed him at that time.

Jon Bing has been very supportive to Norid for years. He was deeply interested in the domain field, and has been an irreplaceable mentor. Jon Bing also played a vital role for Norid's engagement in the legal community specialising in computer and Internet law, and encouraged us to support ongoing research activity connected to Internet Governance. Through a challenging and important phase in the global Internet Governance work, Jon Bing's wide experience and insightful wisdom have been tremendously helpful for us. He was always generous with giving advice and sharing his great expertise.

Several people in Norid come from Jon Bing's legal field and had him as their guiding star througout their studies and subsequent professional development. He will be deeply missed by many people. Rest in peace, Jon.

On behalf of Norid,
Annebeth B. Lange
